Teaching Low-Level Literacy Skills in the ESL Classroom
Tuesday, May 13, 6:30-8:30 pm
Teaching learners who have low literacy levels in their first language can be a special challenge. This workshop will include techniques and activities to help ESL learners develop beginning literacy skills. We will consider learners who have low English oral skills, as well as those who have higher levels of speaking ability, including activities that can be adapted for both types of learners who attend the same class.

This has actually been the first In-Service training session I've been able to attend (my last final ends at 12:30 that day), and good thing because it's perfect for me now that I've started one-on-one training. I actually started this past Wednesday, although with a different student than I'll be usually working with since she didn't come, and spent the entire session attempting to work on none other than low-level literacy. I definitely feel good about moving to one-on-one, but I still have a long way to go, which is why I'm excited about being able to attend this session.
Anyways, there's also a training session on June 3rd from 6:30-9:30 on Effective Teaching Strategies for Hmong Learners which I might attend even though there are no Hmong students at the North Side MLC. I was also thinking of going to the Teaching Intermediate and Advanced ESL Grammar from 6:30-8:30 on the 15th, but in the end I don't think I will since I'd have to miss the Craptacular and I've only been working with beginner-level students. If one of those two weren't true, I'd probably go anyway.

I have to catch the bus at 8 am tomorrow for a training session that I can not miss, so I'm gonna go to bed now.

If anyone is likely to dress up in a crazy outfit, you are! You enjoy the visual stimulants of intense art accompanied with deep plots of fantasy, science-fiction, real-life; or you are just obsessed with Japan and everyone and everything in it. They love to gather with people like themselves at conventions and act crazy! The anime nerds are often associated with the stereotype of being the "psychotic" nerd, because they tend to be obsessive over their characters and series.

You psycho! I'm just kidding! But seriously, all forms of art should be appreciated, and anime is definitely one of them.

Last time I was in MPLS I ran into some Hmong speakers in a coffeehouse and I was so happy, just to hear it.

I have a bunch of Hmong songs (from YouTube) on my walkman, our library has some books in bilingual format. To me, it's just way neat. I know, I'm a nerd. :)

Yeah, I grew up with a ton of Hmong classmates in elementary school, and even a bit in junior high. It seems like most of the Hmong population lives in St. Paul, and most of the Somali population in Minneapolis.
