I really can't give a final say now, but I don't think I want to go into ESL. I mean, I sort of knew this before, but now I have a more tangible sense of it. And really, I can't tell if TEFL will be any better, which sucks since it's basically the only way I know of to work in Japan, although apparently that's basically a 5-year gig tops.
Ugh, life is way too fucking short to take so long to prepare for!!! Especially when you manage to delay said preparation as long as I'm managing to.
Still getting nowhere with this whole "left the university" thing.

Most companies in Japan will hire you for a one-year contract. Usually, you'll be given the option to renew after completing the year, so there's no official limit if you want to stay longer. JET caps off at five years, but a lot of the people who stick it out that long tend to get contracted privately. There's also something called Tokyo Job Fair (it may be exclusively for JETs, though I'm not sure), which helps people get hired in other types of companies after they decide they're not renewing their EFL contracts.

I'm not sure whether or not this helps, but just letting you know that there are other options. If living in Japan is your goal, you could just do one year as an English teacher and then network like MAD to find another job.
