language failure
Apr. 18th, 2008 10:08 pmWhy doesn't a major hospital have any interpretation staff for languages as common as Chinese?
[EDIT: Dude, Caribou low-fat banana nut bread is NASTY. It's so disgustingly sweet... I can't believe I ate half of that before throwing it out.]

Date: 2008-04-19 04:33 am (UTC)Ours has various, including Viet, which alas doesn't stop certain nativist types complaining ("but they're foreigners!!1!!!") which is its own peeve.
From what I can tell (recently I'm getting familiar with the hospital intake) if they don't have your language they'll at least TRY to get someone over the phone. I imagine that's at least as frustrating as your average overseas tech support call, but at least they're trying. I know they do have local Chinese, Korean, Spanish, and Vietnamese (the major non-English languages around here) but, dunno about others.
Me, I speak English, which is good... but they still screw up my name every time :)
