Unions killed the maid cafe!
Feb. 14th, 2008 04:29 amSo, apparently at the New York Anime Festival they had a maid cafe, but because of the unions there they weren't allowed to do anything resembling work like serving food, and there were actually union people there to make sure that they weren't doing any work. How lame is that?
Biology group homework is done, although I'm not sure how well we're going to do on it, and I can't figure out what our T.A.'s name is since One Stop is down. The latter problem, at least, can be fixed in the morning, and I'll do my best with the former.
Part A
Part B

Part C
1. An outgroup is a species which is closely related to (shares a common ancestor with) the study group, but where the study group shares a common ancestor that it does not share with the outgroup.
2. The ancestral character trait for the hindwing is plain (or non-spotted), which we concluded because the outgroup as well as two of the four study group species have plain hindwings, and in the absence of contrary evidence it makes sense to assume an outgroup exhibits the most ancestral traits of the species in question.
3. Species C shares the ancestral traits of plain hindwings, long antennae, and a plain abdomen with the outgroup. These traits are considered ancestral because we assume that the outgroup shares the most traits with the common ancestor of A-E. The spotted abdomen derived character state helped us to place species C because species B, D, and E all share this state, and the principle of parsimony implies that it is most likely that this trait arose only once, which would make sense if species C is an outgroup to species B, D, and E. Assuming the striped thorax is the ancestral trait, the derived traits that C shares with the other species are the plain thorax and the pointed hindwing, although the pointed hindwing is an analogous trait.
4. If we didn't have an outgroup we could still use the simplicity criterion to choose a best hypothesis (i.e., the one with the fewest evolutionary steps), but we would have less evidence regarding the ancestral traits of the species, and thus the likelihood of our tree being the correct one would decrease.
5. There is no evidence of evolution or any changes.
Yup. *wanders off to bed for two hours before Dad gets me up to shovel*
P.S. I spent way too long making that cladogram, just so you know.
P.P.S. I learned how to do addition and subtraction with Doraemon today. :)

Date: 2008-02-14 06:48 pm (UTC)It's HILARIOUS. The New York Anime Festival is full of lose for not checking into union and labor laws beforehand. There are reasons for these rules existing whether or not you like them preventing you from receiving food service from young women in fetish wear....I mean...maid costumes.
