"TESL Test" is fun to say.
Feb. 13th, 2008 10:03 pm[5:15-ish]
Okay, the TESL test? Didn't do so well... Not gonna guess as to what I might have gotten, though, since I don't know how he'll grade the essay portion, and I have no clue how accurate (or inaccurate) my educated guesses on the multiple choice questions might have been. On the plus side (?), my I fiinished my best attempt an hour before class would have let out had it been a normal day, so I'll be getting to the MLC center an hour early. Or maybe later, if I decide to pick up my pencil case from Metro Transit, but I'll still be there quite early.
Listening to the breeze blowing the blinds gently as I worked on the test quietly, I got that sense of dis-ease I get every spring. And it's only February. I'm honestly tempted to try to pull an all-nighter tonight. Not that there's anything big coming up (the test today was the biggest thing this week), but I just feel like I need to regain what footing I've lost since working so much this weekend. I won't, though, because I know that that doesn't work for me. I think I'll just do my best to go home, type up our bio group project that's due tomorrow and e-mail that out to my group members, set my alarm for 3 or 4 am in a vain attempt to get up early, and get up at 7:30 to go to syntax.
Speaking less hesitantly, though,
[9:10]
I'll finish that sentence later.
I did pick up my pencil case after all. Yay, pencil case! (Even if its not my nice Japanese one - which I might not ever stop being sad about. ^_^;)
Despite having 2 hours to prep for my class, I finished about 10 minutes before I had to start. Then again, I usually spend around that much time preparing at home before making copies of worksheets, etc., once I get in, so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised. I am disappointed that I didn't get any work done for next week's class, though. My second disappointment was that I decided to do a quick review of subject/verb agreement and locations and public agencies (DMV, hospital, post office, etc., and what you do at these locations). Bad idea. These took up the whole hour, and I didn't get to map reading/direction following at all. *feels a bit guilty* On top of that, because I was hoping to get on to what I was supposed to be covering, I didn't even cover subject/verb agreement as thoroughly as might have done my students good, and may have ended up just confusing them more. (I explained that in the third person singular nouns add an s and plural nouns don't, but I worry that they might extend this to second person as well... Then again, especially in this situation, I think I may be giving explicit grammar instruction too much credit to assume that I could mess up their understanding.)
Moving back to what I was saying earlier. Speaking less hesitantly, I'm going to make sure to move into the library this weekend. I've been far too lax about that - I don't think I've properly settled myself down there for two weeks. I'm also considering not going to MAS tomorrow, since it's not the regular schedule... Just go to the library straight after bio lab and get my study on. Then again, I'm honestly not in that bad of a situation, and I think I should avoid the pattern of canceling my set relaxation time. Set relaxation is a good study habit, not a bad one...
The other thing is, my manager at Jamba desperately needs someone to work 6 to close tomorrow night, and I'm kind of thinking about offering to work if no-one else takes it. Like, on the one hand, if I think I could use more time to study, it feels weird to skip my relaxation time only to work, but on the other I like being the kind of person who helps out when I'm needed, and I also want to be thought of in a positive light by my managers. I think I achieved that with Meghan (who's long gone), and perhaps with Steve, but since Michelle (the current Jamba manager) is new and doesn't know me all that well, it would be a good opportunity to show her that I'm a valuable employee and all that.
The funny thing is, I've always tried hard to be that valuable employee partly so I could maybe become a student manager. And I did get the sense from Meghan that she placed certain trust in me, partly since I had been trained in some things (since I worked so many hours a week there) that others didn't know how to do, and so she often went to me to carry out these tasks. But in the end, whether or not I'm valued as an employee, I've never actually asked to be interviewed to be a student manager because I assumed they'd say no because of my attendance issues. (To be fair, I think all the managers who know me well would know that this wouldn't be an worry if I worked a late afternoon/evening shift.)
Wow, I'm rambling, aren't I?
Anyways, yeah. Need to finish my bio group project tonight and get caught up this weekend.
Oh, right! I got permission from both Steve (the main Coffman manager? I think he's all the managers' boss) and Sarah (my MLC supervisor) to put them down as references for Guy Healy USA Summer Camp, or whatever the official name for the umbrella program I'm applying for is. Although one of my co-workers (who was also in the program last year) said he applied a while ago and was already accepted (although he's decided not to go), so I'll just have to hope that turning in my application on the due date won't negatively affect my chances too badly; but even if I do get turned down, at least it'll mean me actually making money this summer so I can save up to pay for at least one class in the fall.
And with that, I'll post this entry and get working on said project.
[EDIT: Screw that. The MAS lineup looks too fun to skip. Will def. be there.]
