They'd be a lot more viable if it weren't for that weight concentration problem. There's been some theorizing about approaches to remedy that, the ones I recall the most being those resembling super-material mecha snowshoes. That and there's too many moving parts, which is asking for trouble.

My bigger issue was the aluminum alloy... I doubt that makes for much in terms of armor.
