I just heard a question on the radio: "True or false: the direction that lies on a compass at 180 degrees is south." I'm sorry, but the mathematician in me was like NO, south is at 270 degrees, 180 degrees is west, you idiots!

If North, is zero...how is South not at the 180 mark? West would be 270 such that, read clockwise:

North = 0/360 degrees
East = 90 degrees
South = 180 degrees
West = 270 degrees

If West was in the North position, South would be at 270...such that clockwise the compass read W, N, E, S.

In mathematics, 0 degrees is at "East" and the degrees increase counter-clockwise.

I had no idea. You learn something new every day. But the traditional reading of the compass would make South at 180.
