Special August Counselor Position Announcement
August 12 – August 24
Counselor Application Information
In August, 2007 Guy Healy, Japan, a culture-exchange consulting agency based in Japan, will invite ten students or recent graduates from the United States to visit Japan as part of the USA Summer Camp Program. During their stay in Japan the students will act as camp counselors at USA Summer Camp.
This program is an extra-session supplement to the camp program that currently has 115 counselors for the summer.
Japanese language ability is not necessary to take part in either plan for this program.
DATES: Depart the U.S. on August 12; return on August 24. Students wishing to extend their stay in Japan will be offered assistance in arranging inexpensive lodging in Japan.
USA SUMMER CAMP: This is an English language program for Japanese students. During the program, counselors take part in one 7-day camp for high school students.
This camp is run for the Nagasaki Board of Education.
During the program the students from America will act as camp counselors, working with the Japanese students on a variety of English language drills and activities. Counselors will also participate with the Japanese students in recreation activities, meals and variety of social activities.
SCHEDULE:
Aug 12 Depart USA
Aug 13 Arrive Fukuoka Free Hotel
Aug 14 Prefecture Camp Orientation in Nagasaki Free Lodging
Aug 15 Obon Festival in Nagasaki Free Lodging
Aug 16 – 23 Prefecture High School Camp Camp Lodging/Meals
Aug 23 To Fukuoka Free Hotel
Aug 24 Depart to USA
COST/COMPENSATION: Selected students will be responsible for the following to participate on this program.
1. Airfare to/from Japan (see airfare estimates below) also note supplement below.
2. Meal expenses during hotel stays – estimate: $20
3. Health Insurance -- if student is not already covered by existing policy a very inexpensive travel insurance police can be purchased – estimate: $30
4. Passport (no visa required for U.S. citizens)
For the students selected, Guy Healy, Japan will provide:
1. $700 Supplement to Airfare as noted above. [At first when I got my acceptance e-mail it didn't seem like they were sure if they'd be able to cover this, but according to my mom they will, so after her refund she'll have paid $508.]
2. All transportation costs within Japan including airport transfers
3. All Hotel and Camp Lodging.
4. Food and lodging during all camp sessions
5. Assistance arranging discount air flights.
Further information regarding travel plans, things to bring and host family placements will be forthcoming from the sponsors.
The above was slightly edited since there was some extraneous information in there, but that's the gist of it. If I had read that through properly I probably would have tried to stay an extra day or two to enjoy the country, but my (wonderful) mom already bought the plane tickets for me, so I guess I'll have to leave it at that. :-/ (It still is kinda disappointing to think about, though.)
I'm a little bit weird about missing two weeks of work (~$400 of pay), especially with trying to buy JLPT books and a denshi jisho and a bike, and this is probably part of what's hampering my excitement (as well as the fact that it really hasn't sunk in at all), but I decided that if the experience helps me to decide what I want to do with my life it'll be more than worth missing one paycheck.
To anyone who's interested in my detailed flight itenerary:

(I've worked out that NW is Northwest Airlines, JL is Japan Airlines, MSP in Minneapolis/Saint Paul, NRT is Narita (Tokyo), FUK is Fukuoka, and HNL is Honolulu. The times and dates are pretty obvious, but I'm not sure about the rest of it.)
darkjing was saying I need to bring a digital camera with me, and I'm actually thinking of buying a cheap-ass $50 one... (I'd get a regular film camera but with my photography skills I want to make sure my pictures came out okay before leaving wherever I am.) [EDIT: Woo! My wonderful dad just gave me a call to check up on me since they're gonna be home a little late, and he said that he bought me a camera (as in I don't have to pay him back). Yay!]
I did, however, call TCF to have them put a note on my account that I'll be out of the country for this time period so I don't get my account blocked if I suddenly use my check card in Japan. I also asked about the rates for using my card at ATMs or as a Visa card while I'm there, and while there's a $3 charge for using the ATMs, there's also a 3% charge on both ATM and PoS (Visa) transactions. So I'm probably gonna want to withdraw a good amount of money before I leave and get it exchanged, rather than just exchanging $100 in case of emergencies. The question is, where would be the cheapest point to make the exchange?
Anyways, I'm gonna be seeing my mom on either Monday or Tuesday since we both have both days off, which will provide a most excellent opportunity for me to pick up my passport. ^_^
That's about all I can think of along these lines right now, so I'll leave the entry at that.
P.S. Oh yeah, I'm not sure if I'm actually going to have the time to go shopping, but if anyone wants me to try to buy anything for them let me know and I'll give it my best shot. I do ask that you pre-pay, though, as I don't have much of a bank balance, but I'll keep careful records and make sure to return any money I didn't spend on your behalf. This also applies to anyone who doesn't live in the Twin Cities: you can just mail me cash in an envelope or Pay Pal it to me.
P.P.S. To anyone interested, here's a spoiler-ful article on the details (according to J.K. Rowling) of the epilogue of Harry Potter book 7.
[EDIT 2: I suppose I should also buy a wall charger thingie for my iPod and a power converter...]
