tsukikage: (FMA - bleeding contest)

Man, there was interestingness tonight. First, a group (i.e., three people) of evangelists came to talk to me at work, which I really didn't mind, but they did it in a really annoying way, asking if I could answer a survey for them. They said that for my time they'd give me a CD, but then they didn't even write down any of my answers, and the questions were so... Insistent. It's hard to describe, though... I can just tell that they were looking for certain "helpful" answers. Blech. I don't mind people trying to discuss religion with me, or even trying to "save me", but please do it to my face. I actually told them that at one point. Anyways, they gave me a book that I started reading, and I'll honestly say that I've found a lot of stuff it the first two chapters I read that do something for me. Still, it'd be nice to read a "scientific argument" for God, etc., that didn't start with a bunch of actually interesting scientific statements that could lead me to potentialyl believe in God, but then boil down to logical fallacies absurdly paraded as common sense. I'll just try to ignore those parts, I guess.
Then, while I was waiting at the bus stop for my transfer, two drunk-ish guys came up to me and were getting way too friendly with me, and it seriously put me on guard. Any decent man knows not to go up to a lone 21-year-old girl at 1:15 in the morning and try to shake her hand. At one point I thought the guy was gonna ask me how old I am, but instead he asked what I believed in, saying I must be Catholic, Jewish or Irish. (WTF?) Sometimes I seriously think I should take some self-defense classes, or at least get a bike so I don't have to deal with sitting at bus stops where creepy people can try to get friendly with me. (They almost made me miss the bus, too - good thing the driver saw me try to get up at the last minute and stopped as I gathered all my things that fell onto the ground.)
And it's approaching two hours past what's been my bed time this past week, so at that I'm gonna go to bed.

Yeah, I'm glad you're safe too.

Speaking of self-defense, my brother keeps trying to convince me to take karate classes so that going to work at 4:30 a.m. or closing at 12:30 a.m. at Starbucks wouldn't be a problem. Maybe you and I should do that...though...the only place I can think of to take Karate classes is at my school...so that might be a problem. anyways...yes, take self-defense classes if you plan on being out at 1:15 in the morning.

The U offers a number of martial arts, actually. Although I kind of divide self-defense and martial arts, as when studying martial arts I like to focus on the aesthetics of it, I guess, and I'm not sure if it's safe to actually try to defend myself with it until I'm a higher degree belt.

Yeah, currently I'm beltless, though in my public speaking class this one dude did a process speech on self-defense using stuff he learned in his karate class. It was really cool. That's what first got me interested in taking Karate. Now I debate whether I should take yoga or karate or volleyball for a gym credit...Andy says I should take karate because then he and i could be practice buddies since he and i are around the same height. It would be fun to be able to hang out with you more though.

True. :) But where could we both take it? Not to mention the fact that my dad is 100% against me taking anything at any school this summer.

Good point. I can't take anything over the summer either since I need to work as much as possible. I need to save up as much money as possible so that i can pay for school as i go. I suppose we'll just have to hang out sometime during the summer and at anime club next year:P

Yeah, I took Tai Chi Chuan for a while, that was more my style than karate or the soo bahk do stuff that's popular, but the cost was a bit much for my interest level, so I've contented myself with being in crappy shape and looking for tough people to hide behind. But yeah, it'd certainly be fun to take it again, given the opportunity.

Just out of curiosity, what's the name of the book that they gave you?

One Heartbeat Away: Your Journey Into Eternity, by Mark Cahill. I've only read the first two chapters so far.

1) Don't worry about this one. Just don't fall for that bullshit - religious zealots like them prey on desperate people.

2) This one is a problem because it will happen again, and you need some degree of protection. Self-defense courses will not do you a whole lot of good, unless you're particularly strong to begin with. I assume you have no choice in being at a bus stop at 1am. I also assume a handgun is not an option for you - so the best option that comes to mind is Mace (pepper spray) or some milder variant. If that doesn't work, I figure that since this is a problem for hundreds of thousands of other people, some solution is probably out there - good luck. :)

I brought up mace with my dad before... He says it's actually a bad idea because if you miss, you'll be in a way worse situation than before... I don't know if he's right or not, though.

1a) Also, if you're still confused about the logic (or lack thereof) in religion, check this out: http://www.whydoesgodhateamputees.com/
