"Today, this metropolitan region of 2.6 million is unique because it is anchored by two central cities of almost equal size. While they may be known as the Minnesota Twins, the two cities, separated mainly by the Mississippi River, are anything but identical."

While they may be known as the Minnesota Twins
Unless I'm more out of the loop than I thought I was, this author definitely didn't grow up in Minnesota. Wow.
(For anyone not in the know, Minneapolis-St. Paul is called the Twin Cities, and our baseball team is the Minnesota Twins.)
Also, unless the other twin cities I'm thinking of aren't of as nearly equal size... The uniqueness bit is totally off too. Maybe if they said "relatively unique".

Also, once again we are out of chilled sugary caffeine. :-/ And I try to save it for when I need it, too. Like now. ^^; God knows I love green tea, but it just doesn't do the trick like pop does.

Hey, I live in a Twin Cities too (Champaign-Urbana, IL, which isn't mentioned in that article, but like the others, has resisted mergers at least three times). Champaign is larger than Urbana (3x larger), but Urbana was founded first and is the county seat (which has caused resentment from Champaign over the years - Champaign was first started as "West Urbana"). The University of Illinois (where I work in IT, I've visited the similar department and facilities at U of M quite a few times for work too :)) straddles the cities but is mostly in Urbana. I myself live in Urbana's downtown.

I have relatives in Minneapolis, and I have NEVER heard the place called "Minnesota Twins" either :)

Lots of people use "unique" in a comparative or relative sense these days, Nastassja. I think that's what was being aimed for, with that usage, rather than meaning that they're unique in the strictest, singular sense.
