For this paper, you will be using the texts and tools available through the library to research a particular time, place, and topic, and write a 1,500+ word paper. The topic has to be relevant to a class in American multiculturalism, which means that your paper should take into account at least two cultures that were affected by the time, place, and topic. If you need help thinking of a subject, try going back to Topic Suggestions for Paper 1 (available as part of the Definition Paper Assignment Sheet).

Keep the four aspects—multiple cultures, time, place, and topic—in mind as you think about a subject. You could do something like Chinese immigrant poets and the Beats in San Francisco during the 1950s, or the Chicago blues scene and the zoning commissions in the 1960s, or the GLBTQI people wanting to march in Boston’s St. Patrick’s Day parade in the 1990s. . . . Is there some part of your own or your family's history that you would like to place in an historical context?

Ouch... This paper sounds like it'll be a bitch. And I'm not even done with my current paper yet. ><;

Also... I've decided that not only do I like the movie Spirited Away better than Howl's Moving Castle; I also greatly prefer the Spirited Away soundtrack. (Not to say that I thought Howl's Moving Castle was a bad movie - it just was a bit of a let-down for me.)

[EDIT: I just sent an e-mail to my freshman comp. teacher asking if I could meet with her tomorrow or on Wednesday for help with my analysis paper. *crosses my fingers*]

Spirited Away is a far superior film. Howl's is great from the artistic and music aspects, but from the plot aspect, it is somewhat lacking. I personally prefer the music to Howl as a whole, but I really like あの夏へ from the 千と千尋の神隠し soundtrack.

See, one of the things I tend to like about Miyazaki's movies is they don't have all that much of a plot to begin with. Not to say that they don't have a plot at all, but that's really not the point of the movies. Meaning that I can't say personally which plot is "stronger". ^_^;
I think the reason I don't like the Howl soundtrack is much is that it seems to have too much of a "variation on the theme" thing going on, and I've never been much of a fan of that.

Howl's Moving Castle was good, yes, but I liked Spirited Away a lot better as well. HMC had a plot that crumbled and wallowed around a bit too much and wasn't as direct as Spirited Away. Characterwise, I still prefer Chihiro to Sophie, and Haku to Howl. I haven't listened to Spirited Away's soundtrack for a while now, though...
