I'm just gonna put this in a new entry.
Pat figured out the truth behind the fault of my old charger. It is indeed the connection, not the wire.
Which doesn't really help me figure out why I can't use my new charger or whether I need a new battery pack... In fact, the only thing it really indicates is that I have another problem on my hands which can't really be fixed while I'm out of warranty.
*headdesk*

Yeah, I know the feeling. iPods are great until they break, and then they suck because you're out of warranty (in my case, they break 28 days after your warranty expires) and you're pretty much SOL. I can totally empathize, and hopefully you can figure it out. I'm sure that if you really wanted (and the problem was your battery), you can actually buy one online, and replace it yourself for about 1/3 the cost that Apple would charge you. Just a thought.
