War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling, which thinks that nothing is worth war, is much worse. The person, who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

Date: 2006-08-14 01:00 pm (UTC)That being said, with respect to current events, America had a single event where 4,000 people died 5 years ago, on the other hand we've been blowing up Afghanistan and Iraq for years now and killing far more of their natives that we lost in a single event brough on by an isolated group. America seems to have become the greater terrorist in terms of shear death and destruction of lives by our own standards.
