Dad made me uninstall Bit Torrent today, telling me to never install anything like it again. He's convinced that one of my file sharing programs is the reason behind the network constantly failing. He also sees my downloading of 250 meg .avi files as an abuse of our internet connection. Patrick says that BT couldn't possibly be what's breaking the network, and I don't understand how downloading media is an abuse of our connection. Maybe it makes webpages load more slowly, but in my mind the advantage of high-speed internet is not fast page loading, but the ability to reasonably download multimedia. I understand him just as much as if he said keeping this journal was an abuse of our network...
I'm really, really hungry, but I'd have to go downstairs to eat, and I feel uncomfortable being around my dad right now.

What BT client were you using? If it was the old general one (can't remember the version # off the top of my head) it had a real program with fragmenting files all over the hard drive, causing slowdown. If you download a newer client like Torrentstorm or something like that, it supposedly doesn't have that problem and I assume it wouldn't slow down your computer.

If you have DSL, then your router might need resetting every couple days or so. Our has issues like that. We just have to disconnect and reconnect (and I know it's not just me that has that problem, my other friend with DSL has to do that too). It's not a big deal.

I really don't get what your dad is saying about this "abuse of the connection" BS. He sounds like he just doesn't understand. Anyway, bittorrent isn't causing any sort of network failure, I think he's just afraid of getting slapped with a lawsuit for filesharing, which is virtually impossible with bittorrent since you're only sharing one thing at a time and you stop sharing it once you're done. The man needs a little education about current technologies, I'm afraid ^_^;
