For some reason while I was sitting on the bus I was thinking about adopting children when I'm older, and I thought... I'd feel really uncomfortable "picking out" a child. I mean, a part of me would feel like I should adopt a child that others would be less likely to adopt, like a child who was older or who had some sort of disability. Then I realized that to some degree it's silly to adopt a child specifically because they have a disability, both because it's specifically choosing to add significant financial strain to your life, and it's a dangerous thing to "pick out" a child out of some sense of obligation. This person is going to become your child, not just your extra-curricular activity.
Then I thought that maybe the best approach would be to have whatever organization you're working with pick out a child for you, so it would have the element of randomness that you'd get having your own child. Of course, there are a lot more "unwanted" children than "wanted" children in the system since the "wanted" children are more quickly adopted, so that's still kind of choosing the burden.
And then I realized... I really want to have a child with a cleft. Probably just one, but that's something that others would be less likely to adopt that I want in my life. I want to comfort my child with actual experience. And God knows I love the smile of people with clefts. There's just something about the way it quirks to the side...

And that is what i thought about this morning. ^_^;

P.S. w007! It's the first day of physics!! :)

P.P.S. The intarnets in my room should be returning sometime today. Double w007!

Actually the adoption process is such that you get picked, you don't get to be the one to pick. Especially if you want a small child. Your name goes on a list and you would get picked from the list and weighed against other potential candidates.

I have a friend who is in the process of adopting 2 boys (brothers) and they had to wait months and months for a child (or children). They were picked off a list and got the kids with practically no notice and it was take them now or they go to someone else.

Well, I knew that you had to be picked to be an adopter, but I thought after that it was sort of a join process between the parents-to-be and the system as to what child(ren) you adopt. So that's good to know.

And they just finished mapping the last chromosome in the last human genome and it's the one with the gene sequence that has the cleft lip in it. If you're at all interested...
