You asked why the husband would be angry/threaten/shamed about the woman taking the job when he couldn't find work.
If you think about how you felt about your roomate taking out the trash when you felt it was your turn then I think that is approximately what he would feel.
I'm not saying that it is irrational to attribute additional intent to any action, but people often do even when none is intended. Also circumstances may aggrivate the level of this piling on of perceived reasons for the actions of another.
So, the husband feels a responsibility to provide financial resources for the family. He is unable to for various reasons. Add to that his perception that society expects him to provide the bulk of the financial resources for the family. Add to that a drinking problem, bad economy and lack of skills which would enable him to seek alternavte work or an unwillingness to accept work that he feels is beneth his social level.
Of course his violent reaction is irrational and unexcusable, but it is understandable with in the context of that time period and their social context.
A lot of this kind of thinking is still going on, but it is no longer generally accepted as normal nor is it tolerated in most public settings such as work, or school. It used to be very tolerated and accepted as the norm.
I am also not saying that it is not inconceivable (3x negative bonus) that your roomate took out the trash with the intent.
