After reading a post in [livejournal.com profile] sophysduckling's journal, I have an announcement to make:

Dear parents, school administrators, and news sensationalists,
Explain to your children the potential dangers of internet use, how to best avoid those dangers, and then get your overprotective mitts out of your childrens' choices.

Teens' Bold Blogs Alarm Area Schools: Uninhibited Online Remarks Full of Risks, Officials Warn

Really, it's the internet age equivalent of making your children stay at home unless you're accompanying them.

I know! I've been using journals and messengers since I was 14, and I even tend to tell people my (gasp) real name and where I'm from. I've given people I trust my address! I've flown to Missouri to hang out with people I know from the internet! And somehow, I'm still alive and well. Kids just need to learn responsible internet using. Getting to know people online is one of the best features of the internet, I think, and parents need to get OVER IT. If every kid who gave their name to strangers ended up abducted, raped, and killed, it would have happened to me long ago.

Oy oy oy... people sure are getting nosey about the internet... I mean, okay, if you write something along the lines of "That little f***** in my math class ought to _______," or "I want to kill _____", then we have reason to complain or get on this person's case. But to clamp down like this by not letting people display any of their emotions at all is pathetic, and unhealthy. Some of us need to feel relief and the way that we achieve that is by going onto LJ/Xanga/Facebook/Myspace. I know my parents are like the adults in that article, and it took quite a while for them to accept my online friends. But this just crosses the line...

Yeah... Especially on LJ, where you can filter who can read your posts.
