aluminumstudios on this (mainly that I sould use SSH and not even bother installing it), but I need to learn how to use Unix for my c. sci. labs, so I bought myself a book at the Coffman Bookstore and am thinking of installing some freeware version of Linux so I can practice what I'm reading. Anyone have any reccommendations for me?

Date: 2006-01-19 02:49 pm (UTC)You need to find a Linux "live" CD. This is a bootable CD with Linux installed on it. YOu can boot into a fully functional Linux OS without having to install it on your hard drive!
Knoppix is one Live CD that I know about. A bunch of organizations and people have made them. I'll see if I can link you to any later ...
NOrmally they come in the form of an .iso image that you burn and viola! A bootable Linux OS on a CD!

You would go to one of them, and it should probably last an hour. I was thinking about going to one. They have the room and times listed on http://acm.cs.umn.edu/classes/
