But I do think that suicide rates in countries like Japan are more linked to cultural differences than any specific trigger or pressure like acadmics. In Japan (and some other countries) if you fail or do something bad suicide is traditionally considered honorable (at least in the sense of it being a sign that you realize your own incompotency and removed yourself because of it.) In Western culture we have an absolute attitude that suicide is bad and don't accept it under any conditions.
