In my efforts to find the true religion, I've been reading the Book of Mormon along with [livejournal.com profile] golden_mp3, and on Wednesday I read 2 Nephi 3: 15. The shock has worn off since then, but I was utterly blown with the realization that there are three possibilities: Joseph Smith was mentally ill, a con artist, or the Book of Mormon is true. With other holy books, there is the possibility of misinterpretation, but this verse was so incredibly detailed that it could not have possibly been misinterpreted.
I don't know why I'm saying this, but I am...

And by that, I mean, in your own words :)

That's like CS Lewis's liar, lunatic, Lord argument. I'm not sure how convincing it is; I'm not sure that the truth might not be a mix of the three.

Too, the same argument can be made for other religions, as well. Joseph Smith had translated plates. Mohammad had the Qu'ran dictated to him.

No dis on the Mormon Church, but after hearing about how the religion was "born" I can't take it very seriously.

There are two stories to it - the one that the Mormons teach in their Sunday Schools, and the one that the general populous tells. The real question is "Which one is right?" and even if you decide the Mormon version is right, you still get to ask yourself "So, was Joseph Smith a nutjob?" Hearing the story from a skeptic's angle can really make you question the angle of a stout believer.

Ah, the memories. A lot of people are convinced that Mormons have the "true religion" because some of the things written in the Book of Mormon are shockingly correct, when no one could have known about it at that point. People have converted over single passages that rang true for them.

I personally used to think that it must have been true, because the Mormons are such good people as a whole; they give a lot of themselves for the common good, and I have a lot of respect for the religion as a whole.

However, I have trouble believing Christianity as a whole. The more I studied it, the more confused I became, until I simply didn't care anymore. As far as I'm concerned, until I see proof, Christianity (and some other religions as well) is just a compilation of ideas: Good ideas and Wierd ideas.

Religion is a fun topic of discussion. =D

Man I wish the Mormons I had met had been good people who gave a lot of themselves for the common good instead of mean, spiteful, hateful, scared people who told me I was going to hell for simply being born to a 14 year old mother out of wedlock. Nevermind that the two girls who told me that were both pregnant within a year and had their babies at 15 out of wedlock and yet their families and churches, who had supported their hateful comments from the start, had backed up their children because clearly they were different from everyone else since they were Mormon.

I would really like to honestly meet nice Mormons who weren't fucked out of their heads by their religion. But then I could say that about a lot of the Christians I grew up around who seriously drove me out of and ruined the religion for me.

I admire you for trying to find the religion that speaks most to you. I did the same thing when I was younger, and I am happy with where and who I am now. And I hope that, when you find the religion that makes you want to be the best person you can be, you'll find a church/group/what have you that is supportive and kind and good.

I once looked at The Book of Mormon, and I can say I wasn't impressed. Most Christian religions have really lost their luster with me because of the fact that not a single one of them can agree on anything. I stay out of the whole religion debate because I already know too much, and I don't like getting into it with people. Yay for Buddhism!

:-P But I thought you considered yourself a Pagan? Or do you consider yourself both?

well, I'm pagan-ish. I don't really claim any one religion in particular, I just take the best of what I can from all the religions that I have learned about.

If you became Mormon, I'm afraid I'd have to de-friend you. ;-)
