tsukikage: (よつばと! - OH GOD WHY?!?!)

Well, today was all sorts of special, and took way longer than I had intended it to.

So, let's start with my expectations for the day:

Get up at 9. Have breakfast. Take out the garbage and recycling (including cleaning up the garbage that had spilled all over the driveway after animals probably got into numerous bags that were on the ground after cleaning the house recently). Do some studying. Take a shower. Leave for stats at 1:30. Bike to Marketplace Mall for my 4:40 appointment to get my eyes checked for the first time in 10-ish years. Be told that my eyes were just fine and to come back in two years. Quickly pass through a number of clothing stores at the mall to find a blue sweater for work and buy it. Go to Old Navy with my receipt to get the alarm device removed from my pants. Arrive home by... 7, 8 if I actually did end up needing glasses. Study.

How did it go, you ask? Well, let me tell you!

Let's start with my not getting wrapped up with my morning early enough to take a shower. Whatever, I don't think I was visibly oily today.

Then, on the way from Parkland to Marketplace Malll, maybe a quarter of a mile away, I hit this... uneven... patch of pavement which I at first thought punctured my tire. No problem, I have about 30 minutes until my appointment, I'm 5 minutes away, I have my bike patch kit, and I know how to use it. Well, turns out my tire hadn't gone flat. Instead... Well, I think the axis of my wheel got thrown off, and there's also something weird with my brakes. There's always something weird with my brakes. [livejournal.com profile] ellie_desu on the slim chance that she'd be able to diagnose my problem over the phone and tell me what to do about it, at least until I could get in to The Bike Project again, but that was a no-go. So I decided to just skip Old Navy and looking for a sweater and just go straight to The Bike Project after I was done at Lens Crafters. Thankfully I discovered that I could still sort-of ride my bike to the mall rather than walking my bike the whole way (and even that would've been hard, since, well, it was more fucked up than that). Of course, once I was almost there I realized I could make things easier by pulling one of the brake cables out of the way as I rode, but it still saved me a tiny bit of time.

So, I got to my eye appointment, and I could tell during the tests that my right eye was doing faaar better than my left eye. As it turns out, my right eye is basically 20/20, but my left eye is +1.50 sphere and -1.50 cylinder on a 50 degree axis. After researching what this actually means online... I actually still don't know entirely what this means, but if my current "understanding" is right I'm basically farsighted at an angle. The interesting (and frustrating) thing is that apparently my brain has learned to basically ignore the signals from my left eye, which probably explains why I didn't notice this until now. It also makes me wonder if there's any point in getting glasses, but the doctor said it's possible it'll help with my headaches, and it's also possible my brain will start processing the signals from my left eye again, or at least to some degree. I suppose the most important thing is that I've always thought that by not wearing a proper prescription you hasten the worsening of vision (a thought that might be total B.S., I realize), and as such I don't want to forgo correction even if it doesn't have any immediate practical value.

Anyways, I spent entirely too much time picking out my glasses. (Then again, given that I'll probably be wearing them every day for the next year or two, maybe it wasn't too much time.) Thankfully [livejournal.com profile] greenwoman was there herself (by chance, though I knew that she'd be there about the same time beforehand) and was able to give me her opinions on some of the glasses I looked at. I feel like I didn't try on enough pairs, and I'm still not sure if I picked the best one between the last two I was debating between, but pretty much everyone in the store agreed that the ones I went with in the end looked the best on me.

One thing I'm still wondering about is the sunglasses... Granted I can see the road just fine and don't feel that I'm in any danger while driving if I don't wear prescription sunglasses, but a part of me was compelled to at least eventually get prescription sunglasses, and the salesperson was on her best salesperson behavior and convinced me to get a pair that day. My other concern was whether I should get transitions or separates. Really I wanted magnetic clip-ons like Patrick used to have, but at first they didn't even know what I was talking about, and when I by chance found a pair (for children) and showed it to the salesperson, they said they actually recommend against that type because it has a tendency to scratch the lenses when you put them on. Anyways, I generally don't like the idea of transition lenses, since I get worried that they'll "wear out" and not go completely clear at some point (as I've heard they eventually don't transition as quickly or don't darken as much as they did at the beginning). In the end I did indeed go with separates, but after later events I was reminded of the other reason transitions may have been the better choice: if I don't have to switch between sunglasses and regular glasses, I'm less likely to lose either pair. Which is a serious consideration for me.

Now, for better or worse I applied for the Lens Crafters interest-free credit card (my glasses did cost $616.04), and was approved for $1,500. Increased CUR denominator GET! (Gotta pay more attention to the more controllable numerator, however. And I wish salespeople were allowed to understand why I'd be nervous about taking a hard inquiry.) I finished paying and everything at 7:20, and the regular glasses needed to be sent in and wouldn't be ready for around 10 days, but they were able to make my sunglasses in the lab so I went around the mall for an hour. Stopped at the T-Mobile store to see if they could figure out what my new phone would be based on it being a Samsung at $10/month for web; they said I most likely would only be able to view pages with an exclusive mobile site and that I'd probably only be able to view 50 pages a month. (WTF? If that's true, $10/month is totally not worth it.) Looked at a few clothing stores for sweaters and finally found a good turtleneck when I was poking around Macy's, but it was $60 and I wasn't even sure that it would be that much warmer than my Land's End shirt, so I passed it up. Maybe I'll bring in my uniform shirt when I pick up my regular glasses and compare more carefully, but still... I can probably find something way cheaper online. Got a pretzel dog with garlic powder at Auntie Anne's. Looked at way-too-expensive purses. Generally putzed around.

After I went back to Lens Crafters to pick up my sunglasses I, of course, tried them on, and it was weird. To be honest, things looked more blurry, but when I covered my right eye and compared my vision with and without the glasses, my left eye could clearly see better with. I have to wonder if maybe me brain is somehow "correcting" for my left eye rather than completely ignoring it when I have both eyes open, and somehow by fixing the vision in my left eye my brain's ending up hyper-correcting. If that's even possible or makes sense. More likely it's a simple matter of not being used to them.

Anyways, by the time I got to the bus stop at 9 it was much too late to go to The Bike Project, so I was ready to just head home. While I was waiting at the bus stop I called my mom, the bus came and I got on the bus, we waited there while the driver was on break, and right as the bus was getting ready to leave I realized... I had left my bike at the bike rack. So rather than ask the driver to wait for me I just took my stuff off the bus and waited for the next one which would come in a half-hour. Got on the next bus, got to the Illinois Terminal, waited for my bus home, got on that one, got off the bus, and started walking home. And realized that I had left my bike on the first bus. Then realized I couldn't quickly find my cell phone. Got home and couldn't find my cell phone despite looking thoroughly through all my bags and pockets. So, at 10:20 PM I had to knock on the door to have someone get up and let me in. (Note: my house keys are attached to my cell phone. Very convenient for when I need to find my keys, since I can literally call them.) Thankfully Mary was up (I hope she didn't say that just to make me feel better about getting her out of bed) and let me in, but... Ugh. And then Elizabeth was online when I got home, and when I told her about it she called CUMTD (the bus company here) for me (despite my being sure they'd be closed and wouldn't answer the phone), and found out that they had my bike, phone, and helmet and that it would be at the Illinois Terminal for me tomorrow at 8 am. Thank. Goodness.

And then I wrote this entry. ^^;

So, The Bike Project is closed tomorrow, but The campus Bike Project is open from noon to 5 on Friday so I'll get my bike fixed then. Maybe take my pants to Old Navy again afterwards. Which means that for tomorrow I'm just left with taking in the garbage/recycling bins tomorrow, trying to make up for lost time today in terms of studying, and going off to calc (by bus). Might just wear my new sunglasses at the bus stop. ;) I hate that the weekend always comes so quickly, though... Just two more days off of work this week. Woe is me. But I've got to finish paying off my computer, glasses, and save up for a new bike that won't constantly break, so whatcha gonna do?

P.S. Got a 12.5/12.5 on my last calc quiz. Granted it's only worth 2% of my grade, but whatevs, any perfect score in math is good news right now.

EDIT: I have 90 days in which I can return any glasses for a full refund or exchange. Would I be a total ass for returning both glasses and getting the transitions instead. And if I wouldn't be an ass for it, should I?]

Oh, I don't know- the bike situation would have had me in a tizzy too. I'm so glad that the MTD still has it. Phew.

Seriously. ><; Although perhaps having to buy a new one would be a blessing in disguise?

Heh, good point! You should just say it was intentional ;) But hey, at least there's the police auction every year :) I hear that's the best place to buy bikes!

Hmm, I'll take that into consideration.

Glasses

Every time I get new glasses, usually the exact balance of which eye needs more correction, and by how much, has changed at least a smidge, and I feel like I'm wearing some kind of 3-D goggles instead of real glasses for a day or two afterwards, I think 'cause it takes that long for my brain to adjust how it reckons parallax. @o@

Give it a few days, hopefully you'll find your vision clearer than ever. If not, go back to the glasses people and see if they need any adjustments.

Good to know that's normal. Well, we'll know in about two weeks...

Transitions are not too bad (though they add a lot to the price). I've had a pair for 3 or 4 years and haven't noticed a degradation in switching. All in all, I think the lenses will probably outlast most frames for me, since after a few years frames just don't fit quite right any more (at least in my experience). Or maybe I'm just hard on glasses frames.

I find I don't like switching to sunglasses since 1) it's annoying to have to do the switch. 2) I get annoyed by the tinted glasses if I suddenly go from normal light to tinted glasses. So, transitions get extra props from doing gradual switching in my book.

Oh and brains are weird with regards to eyes. I have one farsighted eye and one nearsighted eye. And I switch dominate eyes depending on whether I'm looking at something close up or something far away, lol.

Yeah, but they're cheaper than separate sunglasses and regular glasses.

$600 for both or for one?

Also, bike project is open 6-9 tomorrow. What were you looking at?

For both.
And yeah, I mis-wrote there. One of theme is closed entirely, and I can't go to the other because I have class from 6 to 7:50.

If you think you would be significantly happier with transitions, I don't think there's anything wrong with exchanging the glasses you got for new ones as per the store's policy. Personally, I wasn't all that impressed with transition lenses when I had them - I often found that they didn't transition dark enough or quick enough to fully replace proper sunglasses, and often it took inconveniently long once I went inside for them to clear up again. But, your mileage may vary.

They have a generous return policy for customer satisfaction! Don't be afraid to be satisfied by it. :D
