The main character's love rival just commited seppuku, and he awakes to discover this. Time to play happy, uplifting music!
...
Whut?

Although I guess it makes sense if it's meant to highlight the contrast between the happiness he should be feeling at his wedding and the horror of the situation, but I don't know how good a job it actually does at that.

I thought that it was brilliant. It really helps to emphasize what Sensei says at the end about how K haunts him even on what's supposed to be the happiest day of his life.

I just love that sort of emotional dissonance.

I'm getting sort of depressed about all the comments I'm getting from people regarding this semester, that are all shades of "well, THAT was weird..." Makes me feel really lonely in liking these shows that I absolutely love. I really wish people would invest themselves a little more, but I guess I'm just kind of alone in that :/

I definitely have a lot of "THAT was weird" with shows 1-3, but for the most part I'm still enjoying them quite a bit, and perhaps with the exception of Sakura no Mori no Shita (that was *too* modern, I guess), I'm loving Aoi Bungaku. I'll admit that I enjoy Gosenzosama Banbanzai! mostly for the direction, although the "this is a play" aspect is losing its novelty. As for the really dense conversations... I don't know why it didn't frustrate me in GitS, but in this show I'm annoyed that I can't watch the screen more and that yet I'm still not able to follow what they're saying.

I guess I don't understand it well when people can't watch and read because for a long time I haven't had any trouble doing that (even with Tatami Galaxy, which has subs flying at you at warp speed, ha ha).

I'm really planning to do a Gosenzo-sama writeup when we're done watching it. There's a lot going on and a lot of think about too, it's not just the staging of it which is the appeal for me.

I *can* watch and read to some extent, and the simpler the Japanese is the more time I can spend watching. I mean, with Hikaru no Go I'm primarily watching the screen, and only glancing down occasionally to fill in any gaps. But between the complexity of both the Japanese audio and the English subs, and all there is to miss in the visuals... It's just a lot harder with that show. I guess it just comes down to how satisfied I am with only watching something in my peripheral vision, and that varies from series to series.
ETA: Actually, no, it's the complexity of the Japanese audio, but more the speed of the subs. Although trying to process the complexity might also be distracting me.

I also wanted to add that although the staging is definitely what grabs me the most, I do find the ideas in it to be interesting as well, but I tend to get distracted from the ideas easily as well. In any case, I look forward to reading your write-up. ^_^
