  • 05:53 @pyry Um, according to Google Language Tools, that's not Finnish. Translate? #
  • 06:32 Shit. If I wanted to retire at 65 and live for 35 years with $80k/yr., I'd need to put away $4,176/mo. starting now. #
  • 08:07 Cotton's howling at the birds, as she's taken to do in the morning. Weird dog. #
  • 09:02 Boo - apparently Chrome doesn't sync search engine settings. #
  • 09:27 Wishing the Kami-sama, Mou Sukoshi Dake OST were still on sale at CDJapan. It's gorgeous, and my rip has a bunch of... distortions. #
  • 09:46 Umm... Got breakfast only to find I'm having trouble eating even one bite. Side-effect of the all-nighter, or the beginnings of some bug? #
  • 10:22 I tend to really underestimate the Code Geass OSTs when I'm not listening to them. "The Ruins as they were" is really quite impressive. #
  • 10:50 Ugh. Seriously crashing. Don't think I can get any food in me to chase another 5-Hour Energy, either. Nantoka ganbannakya. #
  • 12:21 @lugia222 I'm liking a lot of things about it, but my jury's still out. Either way, it'll definitely be my browser for schoolwork+research. #
  • 12:25 @lugia222 (My jury's mainly out because I'm not used to it yet. But I've totally become a Windows 7 convert.) #
  • 14:01 I just realized, obviously aging pops. will cause the worker:retiree ratio to decrease, but what about general worker:dependent? #
  • 15:44 @rick65000 But if a society ages because of a low birth-rate, wouldn't the increase in retirees be partially offset by the decrease in deps? #
  • 16:26 My speech textbook informs me that blatant is pronounced "blatant", not "blaytant", and clique is pronounced "clique", not "click". Useless. #
  • 17:01 Fuck. FInished writing the damn outline at 3 today, but I might not get to practice it because I have to spend so much time on the biblio. #
  • 22:23 Going directly from the style of Ningen Shikkaku to Sakura no Mori no Mankai no Shita is... jarring. #
  • 22:28 I have a really strong craving, but I haven't figured out what for. Is that weird? #
  • 22:34 @Shadowajohn I knooooow. We're poor, tortured souls. #

Hmmm...why would you need 80K a year in retirement? Just curious...shouldn't you pretty much just need to pay bills like food and utilities at that time?

True. But I don't want to lose my standard of living that much when I retire, and even to retire with 40k/yr, I'd need to put away $2,088 a month.

What are you using to calculate that value?

(I should clarify that I'm not expecting to have a job that pays me 80k, but I imagine if I stick with accounting I'll be making around 45 or 50k when I retire.) I'm using the Mint.com "Save for Retirement" goal planner, and assuming I retire at 65, live until I'm 35, that there will be 3% inflation, and have a "balanced" investment earning me 5% - it says that would require that I save $4,030,017.
