Nodame really ignites my desire to get back into music. Of course I can't afford a violin, and even if I bought a keyboard that would be too hard to learn on my own, but I suppose the least I could do would be to buy a new (and perhaps nice) recorder and see if I can find some more mature recorder books (unlikely) to work through. I'll try in any case.

[EDIT: Doing a bit of research on what recorder I want to buy, and... Damn. So many to choose from, and I'm not even entirely sure what my budget should be. I'm thinking $150 at the very most. Although now I'm looking at prices for violins, and they're actually not nearly as expensive as I was expecting. Then again, part of why I never really practiced the violin was that it always hurt my neck, and I doubt that will have changed at all, so maybe I should just stick with the recorder?]

[EDIT 2: Kind of makes me sad that I never really got to use the wonderful violin case my mom and Roger bought me for either my birthday or Christmas one year to use with the broken violin my grandma bought me thinking she could get it fixed, but that she had fixed with super glue. I wonder if the case is still around somewhere...]

Are you sure it wasn't just bad violin posture that was causing your neck to hurt? Or maybe you needed a good shoulder rest to put on it to help out.

Of course since violins are expensive, it's probably moot, but still...

I actually had a good shoulder rest. I think the main problem is my posture in general is shit, and playing the violin required me to assume a decent posture, which made me sore?

That makes sense. My violin teacher would always complain about my posture since I don't have that great posture either. She also complained that I'd move my right shoulder too much when I bowed, too. LOL.

I still find it ironic that good posture is supposed to improve comfort, but it only works once you get used to it, which is really hard...

Ooo, if you can get something other than cheap plastic, recorders are great. (I'm a sucker for wooden alto recorders, though somehow I've never gotten around to buying one...)

I really like recorders for how portable and un-finicky they are so long as you're not blowing your lungs out on them or anything stupid like that. It's a really great instrument for just doodling around and seeing what notes come together. (I play instruments mostly by ear rather than by whatever the sheet music says, and have long found even cheap plastic soprano recorders particularly opportune for it for songs that don't have too wide a range.)
