Note the gloves! Back then, real ladies wore gloves most of the time. But, it was falling out of common practice over time. My dad remembers his mom giving up glove-wearing when he was young - she used to wear gloves all the time whenever she went out of the house, and had a bit of trouble adjusting to going out without them as it fell out of fashion.

In other news, why is it still the case that such a high percentage of food jars are so difficult to open that it would be inconceivable that the average housewife would have a sufficiently mighty grip to open them on her own? Can we get them extra-fancy 1940's engineers to work on THAT?

... uh, not that I'm gonna spend a moment more time putting on make-up even if they do.

True, but I've often found them kinda hit-or-miss. Sometimes they just kinda flop around uselessly around the top of particularly difficult jars... >_<:
