Ponyo first weekend statistics
Aug. 16th, 2009 03:05 pmMiyazaki's Ponyo Opens at #9 with US$3.5 Million
Doing the math... Mononoke did 4.8 times better on a per-screen basis, Spirited Away did 4.6 times better, and Howl's Moving Castle did 3.1 times better. Then again, maybe that's natural and healthy with so many theaters participating? I'm no business major, so...
By the way, Ponyo was a wonderful movie, but I think ANN does the best job reviewing it. It was very much a children's movie, and not the sort of one you want to think too much about in terms of "'logic' and 'sense'". If it didn't have all the wonder and magic of a Miyazaki movie, it would have been a 5 or 6, and if it made more sense, it would have been a 9. As is, I gave it a 7. Despite that, it was a delightful treat worth 100% of the time and money of going to see it.
