I wish we were taught japanese here...I can't remember half of what i've taught myself from books :( I don't know any hirugana or kanji yet, either, just listening and writing romanisation. >.
It is something I would willingly pay for tutorials in. Self teaching doesn't stick in the memory as well as being taught.
Also, I like reassurance that what I am doing is right, and one can get into bad learning habits from teaching oneself.
The book I have been learning from was a text book a friend used at university here in england, called "japanese for busy people" which was mainly written for business men, but teaches sentance structure, basic hirugana, as well as useful phrases and practical stuff, all laid out like my old french text books at school!
I'm sure if I looked hard enough, I would find a course within 100 miles, but there isn't anywhere local :(
The only courses here are university courses for university students. I'm working pretty close to full time, and my local tertiary colleges don't do evening classes.
I have always excelled in languages, but I feel like my talent is going to rot away if I don't do something more with it *sigh*

Date: 2004-08-25 02:41 pm (UTC)nan sai desu ka?
or you could ask them how many toshi they are, but I'm not so sure that's all that polite.
toshi wa ikura desuka?
then again, you could just say the following:
Kimi, ne.. toshi yori da nee...
And tell them they look old.
