That's not really the place to offer them. It's just a discussion group. You want instead to offer them in "gmail_invite". That was where I got mine.

Invites are all over the place at gmail - maybe I'll offer them at the one with more users.

Oh, maybe I'm confusing it with another similar group that specifically said "don't offer invites here...."
