So, I was lamenting earlier that I didn't buy any kind of dessert when I went grocery shopping (not that I don't get enough empty calories at work), until I realized: I bought hot chocolate! Yay!

I don't know, you could make the argument that it's a strange sort of phonetic spelling. Still eye-searingly painful though.

I think the basic thing here is that literate readers don't use phonetics - they read entire words. So basically the lack of "entire words" for us to read forces us back into first grade mode, where we actually have to work through each word, slowing us down significantly.
