PS2?

Alright, yesterday I called the repair shop I dropped my DVD player off at and asked their estimate, and they said that the laser was damaged and there was nothing they could do, so I have to buy a new DVD player now. BUT! I realized that I could get a PS2 for about the same price as a lower-end DVD player, and then I could finally get myself set up for DDR. It wouldn't let me unlock the region code or play XVID or MPEG-4 through a USB key, but it would still play, well, DVDs, just fine.

Whatever I do, I'd like to buy it as soon as possible after getting my next paycheck (which is due on Thursday) since watching in the parents' room doesn't always work.

A PS2 will give you gaming, and DVDage. If you get a Gameshark cheat disc, 9 times out of 10 it'll have an "DVD Region Free" thing that'll bypass regional lockout, allowing you to play Japanese DVD's. It's worth it, trust me.

Despite my argument below against the PS2, I'll second this argument for it. Regional lockout, like anything else, is hackable. Worst that'll happen is you void your warranty and bust your shit, the former of which on an old system probably isn't an issue.

I have mixed feelings, hence not voting.

Actually, the Gameshark is just a disc. You put it in the PS2, boot it up, and a menu comes up with the different options on the disc. No modding/endangering your system required.

If you get a PS2 not only will you have a past-gen console but you'll sacrifice your ability to region lock unless you purchase even more equipment for it. A DVD player will be cheaper and you won't be tempted to waste your money on even more stuff you don't need.

But you'll want to get DDR and that's expensive and then your pad will break and so you'll need to buy a new pad and you'll have to get the new game when it comes out... honestly it's not worth it.

True, DDR is an expensive hobby. And are you gonna be doing that upstairs? It will probably make your family want to kill you if you do.

Only when they're not home.

I just bought a region-free DVD player for $46 yesterday that got great reviews on Amazon. Can you get a PS2 for $50?
