Man, I'm on the other side of it - got picked to be on a search committee to hire a guy to work on another team (programmer, but won't be working with me).
We had the initial "weed through the resumes" meeting this morning, and it was extremely annoying, because Mr. Annoying (another guy on the committee, who WILL be working with the new hire, on the other team) just kept on wanting to reject everyone on sight for the slightest of reasons. "Lives too far away? Why bother?" "Not a citizen so there's going to be visa hassles I just know it[1]" "Last few jobs were not programming, but rather low-end service gigs? Off with his head!!!" "Doesn't know exactly the development engine I want? Forget it!" and of course the "What? He lives in California and earns more than we pay? Don't even bother, he'll never move" like, WTF?
I swear, it's like he's never considered the idea that people occasionally take jobs of lesser desire when the economy sucks, or might actually want to move to a location for less $$$ for completely non-work-related reasons... can it hurt to call back and ASK, if the applicant is otherwise qualified? Geez. Plus the guy was making fun of names.
So I did win some, but this is gonna be a long, suck-filled process.
Anyway, as another person with no DL, I can say one of the reasons I personally might pick a city is that it has good transit, for instance, but...
[1] but one of those guys was a GREEN CARD HOLDER, Mr. Annoying has no idea how immigration works...
