Dear Mitch,
I'm e-mailing you regarding my absences on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week; there was a family emergency and I had to go out of town. When you get this could you reply with the reading assignments for today and tomorrow (Wednesday and Thursday)?

The reading assignments are attached. Look at page 4.
The class handouts that we read for today are available on my office door (Folwell 423) in a manilla file folder.

Nastassja-
Given your three absences, you are in danger of not passing the course (18 of 22 attendance points are required to pass). Although it is not specified in the syllabus, cataclysmic events make way for some flexibility in the attenance policy.
Can you please describe, in general, the nature of the family emergency you mentioned? Is it likely that the situation will require further absences?
Please let me know as soon as you can so we can address the issue.

I didn't have a family emergency. I got behind at the beginning of class, and was too embarassed to come in without having completed my homework assignments. I'm sorry for lying. Thank you for being such a wonderful teacher - I would have liked to have learned more from you.

Nastassja, I'm proud of you for coming clean. Was this a response to him? Are you out of the class?

I appreciate knowing the truth and respect you for having been honest with me. You have demonstrated a mature level of integrity.
I am sorry that you felt too embarassed to come to class. You made valuable contributions to class discussion.
I think you realize that you will not pass the class. If you are unable to withdraw from the class, I will post a failing grade next Monday.
