looking over my freshman comp. syllabus
Jan. 17th, 2006 10:07 amIntersectionality:
This term comes from the legal field, in which it used to be that a company that did not discriminate against white women and did not discriminate against black men could not be sued for discrimination, even if it discriminated against black women. That is, people could sue for discrimination based either on gender or on color, but where those two categories intersected was not a legally recognizable standpoint. The laws had to be changed to recognize intersectionality.
To focus on a particular axis of identity —sexuality, race, culture, religion—would elide the fact that individuals have multiple, sometimes conflicting, identities.
From my freshman comp. keyword list. I must say, I'd never heard of that!
On a side note, I was just thinking that I really wished there was a Thottbot engine for Firefox - and there is! :)
