tsukikage: (Doctor Who - dance)
Shoot... Left my iPod charger/cable at work today, so now I can't use it at all until I go back, which I may just do today if I can get off my lazy ass.
So, yeah, Fujimoto-sensei goes through the grammar slides way too fast, so I don't really have any chance to take notes. Plus, I can't really copy them after class because I have to go home and get my single hour of sleep before work.
Speaking of single hour of sleep... I'm thinking of changing up my registration again (today's the last day to drop classes without a W and with a full refund). For reasons of time and money and 茶道=shiny, I'm thinking of dropping MATH 1272 (4 cr.) and taking LING 5993 instead.
So, get this:
LING 5993 Directed Studies (Section 5):
Verbal and Nonverbal Communication through Tea (1 credit)

Tea ceremony is a form of meditation and interpersonal communication which has been passed down several centuries in Japan. For this ritual of equality shared by the high and the low, the wealthy and the poor, even samurai warriors removed their swords before entering the tea room. It is learned through the body movements involved in making, offering, and drinking
mattya, a frothy green tea. The course will consist ofkeeko 'practice' sessions in which the tea ceremony will be taught through body movement. Verbal communication will be limited primarily to Japanese expressions used in the tea ceremony context. The focus will be on how the meanings of verbal and nonverbal forms are embodied in their use.

PREREQUISITES: JPN 3022 Intermediate Japanese, OR permission of the instructor.

Practice sessions will probably be held on Wednesdays 10:00-12:00, but the time may change to meet students' schedules. (Time commitment= 2-3 hours/week)

ORIENTATION MEETING: Friday September 8, 4:00-6:00 207 Nolte Center.

NOTE: Enrollment will be limited to about 5 students. (Most practice sessions will be conducted sitting
seeza on your knees.)

INTERESTED STUDENTS: Please contact Polly Szatrowski at szatr001@umn.edu and come to the orientation meeting.

Yes, ladies and gentleman, the linguistics department is offering a 5xxx level class in the tea ceremony requiring you to have completed second year Japanese. ^_^;

So, I couldn't go to the orientation session because I had work, but I e-mailed her to ask if I could join the class. Well, she said that I'd be welcome to take the class, but the sessions have been schedule for Mondays from 12:10-2:10, and I currently schedule for the MWF 12-3 shift at Jamba, but I'm thinking of either asking Meghan if I can just get that shift off on Mondays or drop that shift altogether. Then, on top of that... Well, if I'm only going to be taking 6 credits and not 9, I might be able to drop Jamba altogether. Well, "able" is a funny way to word it, as in most (but not all) ways I prefer working there to working at S.A, but I am getting worn down by my schedule and it's affecting my performance at S.A. Plus, if I had to leave one of the jobs, leaving Jamba would be the smarter choice, at least right now.
In any case, for the time being as long as I'm taking those six credits I can drop what shifts I need to to take the 茶道 class and decide if I want to make more drastic changes to my work schedule later in the semester.

Now to get some sleep so I can meet Sergey at the U at 1:10, followed by a three-hour shift at work and a trip to the mall to pick up the new BnL CD. :) (Well, first I suppose I should call the B&N there and make sure they actually have it in. If only I had gotten around to pre-ordering it at the Highland location (which doesn't have a music section).. :-/)

[EDIT: Okay, the text from the 文法ノート2 slides are online, so I'm good.]
