'Definition Paper' thesis: first draft

"Because animation takes us away from our own reality, simultaneously allowing viewers to distance themselves from what they are watching and immerse themselves in the 'other world' that they are viewing, anime provides nearly limitless possibilities to explore both Japanese and world-wide contemporary society."

As I have a habit of saying, "could be better, could be a whole lot worse".

Indeed. I was also talking with [livejournal.com profile] yumenohoshi about it, and even if you had top-notch special effects, would Mononoke-hime really have had the same effect in live action? With the deer god thingie (I forgot his name) and kodama next to real faces?

Definately not. The fact that it's drawn means that the kodama don't have to occupy a realistic enoguh space in reality, and they can be what they need to be. I think with CG there's this urge to make things look too realistic, when kodama need not be.

Oh right. I suppose it would be hard to make heads fly off bodies gushing with blood as easily, too. ;) Unless you're quentin tarantino.
