And today I had the opportunity to say "I lost my memory".

eurohybrid62 got me. I still can't play the higher-end video files I tested out (although there may be a threshold here and I went just a bit too far), so I'm thinking for that I should get a new video card. However, my computer is now delightfully non-sluggish. I love how quickly programs open now. :) I still haven't tried to burn anything yet - I'll do that tonight after all my torrents finish. Well, tonight, anyway - it'll be a while until they finish.
